If you’re driving a Nissan Navara D40, you’re driving a legend and probably thinking, I wish I had a Nissan Navara D40 Longevity Guide. No? Well anyway, as these trucks get older and the mileage creeps up (mine is a 2006 King Cab currently sitting at 155,000 miles) the focus shifts from “fancy gadgets” to “pure survival.”
The D40 is a proper workhorse, but it has its quirks. From timing chain wear to the dreaded “notchy” gearbox, looking after a D40 requires more than just a cheap oil change at a local fast-fit centre. Here is exactly what I use in my own truck to keep it on the road and how we’ve sorted the lighting for proper UK green-laning and winter hauls.
The Engine: A Nissan Navara D40 Longevity Guide
One of the most common headaches for D40 owners is ordering parts only to find they don’t fit. You need to know where your truck was built:
- Spain Build: VIN starts with VSK.
- Thai Build: VIN starts with MNT.
We’ve sorted the guesswork for you with our dedicated Spain Build Service Kit and Thai Build Service Kit.
So, what is the best oil for the Navara D40 YD25? For the oil, I don’t compromise. I use Ravenol HDS 5W-30. It’s a Low SAPS synthetic oil that is vital for the longevity of your turbo and DPF. In an older YD25 engine, cheap oil shears down and loses its ability to protect the timing chain – Ravenol stays stable, even when the truck is working hard.

2. Driveline Health: Sorting the “Notchy” Shift
If your manual gearbox feels like you’re stirring a bucket of bolts, or your diffs haven’t been touched in years, it’s time for a refresh.
I use Ravenol VSG 75W-90 for the front diff, rear diff, and the manual gearbox. It’s a high-performance synthetic that makes a noticeable difference in cold-start shifting. For the transfer case, you need Ravenol T-IV Fluid. Don’t mix these up – the transfer case is a sensitive bit of kit and needs the correct friction modifiers to last.
3. Don’t Ignore the Cooling System
D40s are known for running hot, especially when towing. The factory coolant often gets neglected until it’s too late. I run Ravenol HJC Hybrid Japanese Coolant. It’s specifically formulated for Japanese alloys and seals, preventing the internal corrosion that leads to radiator failure and head gasket issues.
4. Modern Lighting for an Older Truck
The standard D40 headlights are, frankly, rubbish. I’m overhauling my own truck with a setup that works without looking like a Christmas tree.
- Headlight Upgrade: The best thing you can do is swap the tired H4 bulbs for Auxbeam Q30 LED Lights. The difference in clarity and beam pattern is night and day – it’s the single best safety upgrade I’ve done.
- The “Just Fits” Light Bar: We found that the Auxbeam 5D Pro 32” Bar fits perfectly in the lower grille of the D40. It’s a clean look that provides 33,000 lumens of combo beam for when the lanes get dark.
- Bonnet Pods: For spotting the edges of the road, the Auxbeam XP Ultra 5” Pods mounted on Universal Bonnet Brackets. These “side shooters” give you a massive field of vision that standard spots just can’t match.
5. A bit of noise!
My exhaust was falling off, and rather than replacing it with a standard, boring OEM one, I went straight for the kill and had side-exit exhaust fabricated, which, you can now buy yourself!

Honest Parts from an Independent Specialist
Auto House Shop is run by me, Jordan. I’m a UK sole trader based in Powys, and I use the parts I sell.
I believe in being straight with you:
- UK Stock: We keep our most popular lines in-house for quick dispatch.
- Direct Sourcing: If I’m out of stock on Auxbeam, it comes directly from the factory. If a specialist Ravenol fluid is needed, it comes from our authorised distributor.
- Real Advice: I’ve lived with a D40 for years. If you’re not sure if a part fits your Spain or Thai build, just ask. I’d rather you get the right part first time.
My goal with this Nissan Navara D40 longevity guide is to help other owners avoid the common pitfalls of high-mileage trucks.
